The songs on this tape, 23 in total, were all sung in rage, be it political, affective, aimed at survival, or a combination of the three. The first part of the tape forms a transition from our earlier tapes, directly springing from pre- and early industrial labor, often sung from the worker’s perspective. Some songs could be classified as descriptive, while others have assumed more active roles in workers’ revolts. However, these uprisings generally lacked organization. It appears logical to go from these songs to union songs, which are performed to reaffirm the movement’s solidarity and to discuss issues significant to its members. Finally, we will arrive at songs that move beyond specific professions or organized groups to systemic critique of capital and empire. The songs on this tape often know many originals and more reiterations. These reiterations can transform the song’s meaning, discover precedents in previous struggles, and introduce cross-historical forms of solidarity while the lyrics change frequently. The songs are alive, and because it makes no sense to try to trace genealogies to a single source among them, we have included the version whose connotations in its use spoke most to us or the version that we enjoyed listening to the most, which – better put – persuaded us the most.
